Fri, Jan 27, 2023 to Sun, Jan 29, 2023
Sacramento Sheraton Grand Hotel
General Info

It's not easy being an effective trustee or board chair. The League is pleased to offer a workshop for both trustees and board chairs to learn the duties expected of board members of California's Community Colleges. State leaders and experienced trustees will provide comprehensive information on the knowledge and skills necessary to be an effective trustee.

NOTE: These workshops are held in conjunction with the Annual Legislative Conference, January 29-30, 2023. Separate registration is required.

Who Should Attend
Who Should Attend

All trustees should attend the Effective Trusteeship Workshop. There will be ample opportunity to discuss questions and topics surrounding trustee board service. Student trustees and CEOs will also gain valuable knowledge from this workshop.

The Board Chair Workshop is designed for board presidents, vice presidents, and CEOs. Being a board president is an important leadership role. The chair runs board meetings, fosters teamwork, represents the board, and works closely with the CEO.

The Board Chair Handbook will be distributed. Board presidents and vice presidents are encouraged to attend the Effective Trusteeship Workshop with their new trustees and participate in the Board Chair Workshop in the afternoon.

Topics Include:

  • Board Chair Roles
  • Running Effective Meetings
  • Handling Difficult Situations
  • CEO-Board Chair Relations

For trustees participating in the Excellence in Trusteeship Program or beginning their program, all workshop sessions apply toward the competencies.

ETP Competencies

The Effective Trusteeship & Board Chair Workshops are opportunities for trustees enrolled in the League’s Excellence in Trusteeship Program (ETP) to complete work that applies toward the fulfillment of the program's competency requirements.

ETP is designed to facilitate the ongoing education of trustees at a California Community College by providing a solid foundation for effective board governance. We proudly offer the only certificate program in the state for community college trusteeship. The program fulfills the WASC Accreditation Standard IV.C.9 which requires governing boards to participate in “an ongoing training program for board development including new member orientation.”

Below are the ETP competencies that will be offered at these workshops:

[BA] - Brown Act Training
[BE] - Board Evaluation
[BC] - Board/CEO Relationship
