Registration Cancellation Policy
All refund requests must be made in writing. To request a refund for your registration, email Sadie Brown at sadie@ccleague.org. A $50 processing fee will be charged for all refunds, per registrant. No refunds will be issued for cancellations made after Monday, October 31, 2022. 

Payment Policy

Policy & Procedure Service Workshop

No fee to attend! Your district's membership in the Policy & Procedure Subscription Service funds the cost of your attendance at the Fall Policy & Procedure Workshop, but advance registration is required to attend.

Note: This workshop will only be available as an in-person session.  This session will not be recorded.

Registration will close on Monday, October 31, 2022 at 5:00 p.m., or when space fills.

The Fall 2022 Workshop will:

• address the foundational elements of the Policy & Procedure Service,
• review the content of the Fall 2022 Legal Update #41 revisions (this legal update will be disseminated to the one key contact at every district in late October),
• feature sample tracking and organizational tips (and more!) from Mici from the College of Marin and Graciela & Kimberly from the Yosemite CCD,
• answer questions regarding policies/procedures, and
• discuss best practices for ensuring policies/procedures remain up-to-date.

The League's Annual Convention is scheduled for the dates immediately following (November 17 -19, 2022) at the same hotel.

Should you wish to stay at the SFO Hyatt Regency, the hotel guest room info is as follows:

• Room Rate = $275 per night
• Cut-off date = October 25, 2022

2022 Distinguished Alumni Award

This prestigious award recognizes and honors those whose attendance at a California Community College helped them achieve their educational and professional goals and serve their communities.

The League has recognized the distinguished alumni of California’s community colleges since 1964. Please join us in recognizing all of these outstanding alumnus/alumnae on this impressive list.

Three nominees will be recognized as the 2022 Distinguished Alumni Award Honorees. The awards will be presented at the League’s Annual Convention on Friday, November 18, 2022. This award celebrates excellence and is an inspiring experience for all involved. 

The League is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2022 California Community College Distinguished Alumni Award. Join us in congratulating these alumni and read their bios below.

Ann T. Martgan
EMS Operations Manager, San Manuel Band of Mission Indians
Crafton Hills College

Martgan is a shining example of leadership, professionalism, and mentorship, in her mission to aid under-served communities, including the one she grew up in. With humble beginnings and unwavering family support, Martgan sought out opportunities through community explorer programs, after school activities and a local Girl Scout Troup. These programs helped Martgan develop her professional and personal skills and engage in the work force at early age while growing her family. 

Martgan, who earned an EMT certificate from CHC, went on to complete two associate degrees and teaching credentials from local colleges, and obtained her bachelor and master’s degrees in emergency management from Grand Canyon University. She has become a successful educator, published author, and community servant. She currently serves as EMS Operations Manager for the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians. 

Martgan continues to give back to Crafton and has even created an outreach day, partnering with the CTE departments, for the Girl Scouts of America. This event brings hundreds of young girls from under-served communities all over Southern California to Crafton every year to explore career paths in public safety and allied health fields where women are often under-represented.

Jessie Ryan
Executive Vice President, Campaign for College Opportunity
Los Rios CCD

Growing up poor in the Central Valley, Jessie Ryan made it her mission to uplift communities by ensuring students can go to college and succeed. A proud first-generation college student, Jessie attended Sacramento City College, holds her bachelor’s degree from San Francisco State University, and her master’s degree from Saint Mary’s College of California.

Over the past decade, Jessie led efforts to simplify the transfer pathway (SB 1440 & AB 928) from community colleges to four-year universities. She also successfully led efforts to expand enrollment funding for the California State University system and University of California as well as efforts to expand financial aid for California Community Colleges students.

In December 2017, Jessie was elected president of the Sacramento City Unified School District, Board of Education, where her Safe Haven School District policy was lifted-up by then Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson as a state and national model. She was honored as the 2018 Woman of Inspiration by the Sacramento Kings and the 2020 recipient of the Racial Equity Visionary Award by the Center for Urban Education.

As the Executive Vice President for the Campaign for College Opportunity, Jessie leads the organization’s advocacy and policy efforts to increase the number of California students accessing higher education, impact the rate that students succeed in reaching their educational goals, and close racial equity gaps.

Jessie serves in an advisory capacity on the national Tackling Transfer Policy Advisory Board, Campaign for Free College Tuition Advisory Council, Alliance for Regional Collaboration to Heighten Student Success Board, and the Higher Education Equity Network. She’s served as a member of the California Community College’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility Implementation Workgroup, to create inclusive and anti-racist campus communities.

Joseph Straczynski
Writer, Self-Employed
Southwestern Community College

Joe Straczynski, professionally known as J. Michael Straczynski, is a Hollywood powerhouse who credits much of his success to the unique support he received at Southwestern College (SWC). As he details in his book Becoming Superman, Joe grew up poor, raised by abusive parents, and had very little in the way of positive influences. Once at Southwestern, however, Joe experienced staff who remembered his name and offered support, professors who nurtured his talents and encouraged him to believe in himself, and resources, such as the Jaguar Kitchen & Food Pantry (Jag Kitchen), that ensured his basic needs were met. Since that time, Joe has gone on to create numerous iconic pieces of art, and contribute to the growth of many more. His credits include the creation of Babylon 5, the Netflix show Sense8, and the movie Changeling, starring Angelina Jolie. He wrote the screenplays for World War Z and Underworld: Awakening, and was the story creator for 2011's Thor. Joe has also written numerous comic books for both Marvel and DC, including stories for The Amazing Spider-Man, Superman, and Watchmen, and contributed episodes to dozens of beloved tv shows, both animated and live-action. If all of this wasn't enough, Joe has also produced, directed, and authored several books. 

The impact on pop culture is undeniable, but Joe continues to ensure he is also making an impact at SWC, regularly looking for opportunities to give back and to nurture the next generations. Joe has made contributions to ensure the Jag Kitchen can continue feeding students, even encouraging his fans and followers to make donations in lieu of birthday gifts. He has also continued to return to campus, most recently to provide an inspiring Opening Day Keynote address, and is in the planning stages to bring writing workshops to students. Joe is humble, deeply authentic, generous, and brilliant. He is an example of the deep impact that community colleges have on their students, and we couldn't be more proud.
