2021 Annual Legislative Conference: Advocating for an Equity-Based Economy

Engaging with lawmakers about the state budget is critical for the success of our colleges and students. The impact of the pandemic has only increased the need for your participation in the budget process. The League's Annual Legislative Conference: Advocating for an Equity-Based Economy will kick off the advocacy season and provide an opportunity for all of us to advocate for community colleges by meeting with members of the State Legislature to discuss important policy and budgetary issues.
Every year, the Legislative Conference offers an opportunity for community college advocates to meet with their respective members. Attendees are encouraged to schedule virtual meetings after the 2021 conference concludes. Click here for tips for scheduling your legislative visits.
In light of current health and safety restrictions due to COVID-19, the 2021 Annual Legislative Conference is being offered in a virtual format. This year we are pleased to present a virtual program that highlights our colleges' importance so that your advocacy efforts are a success. Conference attendees will discuss priority issues, hear best practices, and learn about strategies to advocate for community colleges successfully.
Who Should Attend
Trustees, CEOs, PIOs, and community college advocates interested in legislation impacting California Community Colleges should attend the League's Annual Legislative Conference. The conference will offer attendees an opportunity to:
- Learn about important state and federal legislation and policy initiatives
- Provide input to help shape statewide policies and the League's federal advocacy agenda
- Hear from key members of the California State Legislature and staff
- Discover ways to advocate for your college/district in the digital age
Registration
Registration is now closed. This year's conference fee reflects the virtual format of the 2021 conference. With all sessions held virtually via Zoom, we are offering only one registration fee for all attendees.
Registration Fee - $199
This fee includes your attendance at the 2021 conference and any digital materials that will be distributed to attendees.

Virtual Legislative Visits
The Annual Legislative Conference offers an opportunity for California Community Colleges to meet with their members, and now is the time to start planning for your January advocacy meetings. The League has some tips to help you prepare for successful virtual legislative visits:
- Schedule Your Virtual Meetings. Identify your regional legislators and request to meet with them virtually the week of January 25th, after the Annual Legislative Conference concludes. Click here to find your California Representative. We encourage you to meet via Zoom as it provides a space to still meet face to face virtually. Be sure to send all meeting participants your Zoom meeting information.
- Get to Know Your Legislators. We recommend learning about your legislators’ background to help find points of common interest and alignment. This is an effective way to make your case.
- Prepare Your Message. Be prepared to tell your district/college’s story. Share information about your institution's key programs, facts about the student population, the business community served by the college, and the economic impact of college programs. Provide examples of how your institution is serving the community. Student success stories, productive partnerships with industry, and data-based evidence of positive outcomes all can be influential.
- Know Key Priorities for California Community Colleges. Every year the League provides talking points of our legislative priorities for California Community Colleges. Updated talking points will be released during the conference. We encourage you to use these talking points in all of your virtual legislative meetings.
- Practice. In this new virtual setting, it is important to practice the flow of your meeting with your team of advocates. Draft a speaker list and consider using digital materials via screen sharing.
