Community College League of California Commends Governor's 2021-22 Budget Proposal for Move Towards an E-Shaped (Equity-Based) Economy

 SACRAMENTO, CA – Today, Governor Gavin Newsom released his 2021-22 Budget Proposal. In response, Community College League of California President and CEO Dr. Larry Galizio issued the following statement:
 
"Governor Newsom's 2021-22 Budget Proposal recognizes the essential role of California Community Colleges and puts the state on a path toward a sustainable E-Shaped (Equity-Based) Economy by investing in California’s largest higher education sector, serving the pandemic and recession's most disproportionally impacted students and families. The Governor's Budget highlights the imperative to further fund students’ basic needs including mental health, and it affirms the indispensable role of California Community Colleges in preparing the healthcare and public safety professionals necessary to confront the pandemic. 
 
We are pleased to see additional investment in workforce development to build stronger linkages between higher education and gainful employment as California Community Colleges are best suited to support displaced Californians' return to work. Most significantly, the budget proposal helps stabilize districts’ funding by buying down $1.1 billion in deferrals. District leaders look forward to working with Governor Newsom, the State Legislature, and our colleagues and community college stakeholders to strengthen the investment in our colleges and an E-Shaped Economy.” 
 
A joint analysis will be released by the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office with further details and information about the 2020-21 Budget Proposal.
