California’s Community Colleges Receive General Operations Increase to Meet Growing Needs

SACRAMENTO, CA – On Tuesday, June 27th, Governor Brown signed the 2017-18 Budget Act, allocating $183.6 million in base augmentation funding to support general operations at California’s community colleges.

The Community College League of California applauds Governor Brown and the California State Legislature for understanding California community colleges’ most significant needs. Increased funding for general operations ensures that our colleges will continue to offer quality higher education. For over a century, California’s community colleges have proven to be the state’s best economic development strategy to confront economic inequality and address civic capacity.

“This budget demonstrates that Governor Brown and the Legislature recognize investing in California’s 114 community colleges is essential for developing a skilled and educated workforce, providing opportunity for Californians to pursue affordable, quality higher education in their communities, and serving traditionally underrepresented and underserved populations including foster youth, veterans, and active duty military and their families,” said Larry Galizio, President and CEO of the Community College League of California.

The 2017-18 budget supports key investments in community colleges, including one-time funding for Compton College, which after a decade of critical improvements earned reaccreditation. “Compton College is pleased with the additional funding to support our transition to an independent college under the authority of the Compton Community College District Board of Trustees,” said Keith Curry, President and CEO of the College. “We would like to thank Governor Brown, the California State Assembly, and the California State Senate for their continued support.”

The state budget also includes a total of 15 out of 29 capital outlay projects, creating jobs and ensuring community college students have access to safe and up-to-date learning environments. Finally, the investment in Guided Pathways offers a chance to transform the student experience. Guided Pathways resources seek to enhance and deepen the impact of student success and support programs and equity services on campus.
