Community College League of California Commends Governor’s Proposed 2024-25 Budget for its Commitment to Equity and Innovation in Education
Sacramento—In response to Governor Newsom’s proposed 2024-25 budget, the Community College League of California’s leadership acknowledged the state’s continued commitment to public education, specifically efforts that support equity and regional workforce progress. In the midst of reduced revenue collection, League leadership noted that Governor Newsom's budget proposal demonstrates confidence in California Community Colleges.
“Governor Newsom’s budget recognizes the essential role of California Community Colleges in advancing equitable economic development for historically underserved communities and families,” said Larry Galizio, Ph.D., League President and CEO. “The Community College League of California and its 116 member colleges appreciate the continued focus on equity, education, and workforce readiness in the proposed budget. We urge the Governor and Legislature to enhance and support local capacity by increasing flexibility to permit our diverse colleges to innovate and adapt to regional economic conditions and community needs.”
Statewide leadership representing the colleges and districts also praised the Governor’s and Legislature’s attention to community-focused needs and student success.
"On behalf of my colleagues, I want to thank Governor Newsom for proposing a budget that focuses on students and recognizes the vital role of the California Community Colleges,” said Julianna Barnes, Ed.D., President of the Chief Executive Officers of the California Community Colleges (CEOCCC), “As we proceed toward the May budget revision, we urge our elected officials to prioritize funding for financial aid reform and student housing as critical components of student success and equity.”
"We deeply appreciate the Governor's commitment to Californians to increase pathways to success through Career Education, and his specific support of nursing programs,” said Andra Hoffman, President of the California Community College Trustees (CCCT) Board. “These efforts directly impact workforces throughout our communities and have been a primary focus of the California Community Colleges. We look forward to working with the Administration and Legislature on expanding our reach in this area, particularly through the Baccalaureate Degree Programs, and expanding our capacity for workforce development.”
