California Community College Trustees Elect Officers for 2023-24, Nine Board Members Elected for Three-Year Terms
The California Community College Trustees (CCCT) elected their leadership for 2023-24 during the Community College League of California’s Annual Trustees Conference held this weekend in Monterey. The membership also affirmed nine trustees for three-year terms through 2026.
The following officers assumed their roles immediately:
- President: Andra Hoffman, Los Angeles CCD
- President-Elect: Loren Steck, Monterey Peninsula CCD
- First Vice President: Nan Gomez-Heitzeberg, Kern CCD
- Second Vice President: Suzanne Lee Chan, Ohlone CCD
- Immediate Past-President: Marisa Perez, Cerritos CCD
As the newly elected CCCT Board President, Hoffman serves as the voice for trustees across California’s community colleges.
“I am honored to have been elected by my peers to serve as the President of CCCT,” said Hoffman. “I am following past presidents who have provided strong leadership for our organization and ensured that trustees were at the table on important issues. I will continue to advance our work around the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) programs and create inclusive and equitable learning environments, to help all our students succeed in the classroom and beyond. I will continue to support trustees’ involvement in achieving the Vision for Success Goals and I am committed to build strong and effective trusteeship to develop the policies needed for our students’ success.”
In addition, the membership re-elected Suzanne Lee Chan, Ohlone CCD; Marisa Perez, Cerritos CCD; Andra Hoffman, Los Angeles CCD; Loren Steck, Monterey Peninsula CCD; Carmen Ramirez, Merced CCD; Barry Snell, Santa Monica CCD; and Barbara Dunsheath, North Orange County CCD. Trustees Jonathan Abboud, Santa Barbara CCD, and Deana Olivares-Lambert, Chaffey CCD, were elected to their first terms on the CCCT Board.
The CCCT Board takes positions on and formulates education policy issues that come before the California Community Colleges Board of Governors, the state legislature, and other relevant state-level boards and commissions. This policy board provides input to the League Board to advance the mission and effectively serve the organization's 73 member districts.
“Our community college trustees are remarkable in the service they provide to their students and communities,” said Larry Galizio, Ph.D., Community College League of California president and CEO. “The members of the CCCT board amplify that effort, taking the lead on issues that impact higher education in California and nationally. I have deep gratitude for their commitment and congratulate the newly elected and continued board members for their service and dedication.”
During the annual business meeting, immediate past-president Marisa Perez highlighted some of the CCCT’s achievements in the last year.
“We have championed institutional funding, financial aid, and basic needs, including housing, to maximize the ability of community colleges to advance student success,” Perez shared. “We have been promoting access to educational opportunities and local flexibility in decision-making to meet the specific needs of each district. We’ve worked to support innovative, sustainable district college leadership to prepare Californians for meaningful participation in a rapidly changing society.”
The Annual Trustees Conference convenes California community colleges’ elected trustees for continuing professional education related to accreditation, governance protocols, DEIA, and student success initiatives, among other topics. The 2024 Annual Trustees Conference will be held May 3-5 at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines.
